Optimal Performance: Designing for flexibility to tell a multi-media brand story

Skratch Labs makes real food-based sports nutrition products including sports drinks and bars to fuel endurance athletes competing in sports like ultra running, cycling, and mountain biking. A much-loved brand with a strong social media presence, Skratch Labs asked ehouse to channel its social media energy and vibe into a new D2C website to make it more engaging for customers to shop.

The Challenge


It was clear Skratch Labs’ D2C website needed some serious rehydration to reach peak performance. It wasn’t meeting sales conversion goals. There were performance issues due to multiple updates over the years, resulting in UX and design inconsistencies. The site was out of sync with the brand ethos and lifestyle imagery featured on Skratch Labs’ other channels. And, it didn’t clearly tell the stories at the heart of the brand, such as why Skratch, how to find your fuel, and fueling people, not just performance.

The Solution

ehouse delivered a winning solution to Skratch Labs with a custom Shopify theme design that enables maximum flexibility. The team developed a library of content modules designed to bring the brand story to life through animation, lifestyle photography and brand graphics, user-generated social content, customer testimonials, handwritten notes, athlete profiles, and a blog. Intentionally building the theme with an agile infrastructure allowed ehouse to leverage it with minimal modifications to create a new, gated Skratch Labs Pro site, which saved on time and cost.

On product pages (PDPs), ehouse designed hyper-specific custom fields to allow Skratch Labs to tailor product information at a variant level, such as core nutritionals, usage instructions, and product highlights. The team took a highly visual approach to the global navigation bar and designed it with customizability in mind. ehouse also moved Skratch Labs’ blog from a page builder to the Shopify theme for brand consistency, faster page loads, and improved SEO and Core Web Vitals – creating a significantly better user experience.

The Result

ehouse brought Skratch Labs to the finish line with a fast, high-powered website dialed into the brand story. The smooth launch reflected ehouse’s thoughtful approach to content management, making it easy for the Skratch Labs team to populate pages using a familiar process, with virtually no learning curve. And, while the Shopify theme supports a range of content types, ehouse’s streamlining of how creative assets can be used ensures visual consistency on every page.
