Scaling Boxed Water’s DTC and B2B Growth on Shopify 2.0

Boxed Water is challenging the plastics industry with a sustainable, plant-based, 100% recyclable alternative to plastic water bottles. The first brand to create a new category of sustainable packaged water, Boxed Water offers the purest water in a 92% plant-based carton.

The company sells its water and flavored water directly to consumers and wholesale to businesses. In addition to reducing waste and pollution, Boxed Water has planted more than 1.5 million trees since 2015 through its #BetterPlanet program.

The Challenge

Boxed Water believes that small changes can have a massive impact. They knew that finding the right partner to help redesign their site would lead to stronger conversions for both orders and subscriptions. As a top-tier partner for both Shopify and Recharge, eHouse built a beautiful solution.

Boxed Water also wanted to create a similar look and feel for their wholesale customers. However, Shopify B2B does not allow subscriptions. What about all of the offices, gyms, restaurants, hotels, and spas that wanted to receive Boxed Water on an ongoing basis?

For Boxed Water, this was a limitation. For eHouse, it was an opportunity.

The Solution

B2B Subscriptions on Shopify

As a solution and a testament to Shopify’s flexibility, eHouse built a custom wholesale portal that enabled Boxed Water to leverage Recharge for B2B subscriptions on their Shopify B2C platform.

Custom B2B subscription purchase flow: A tailored subscription flow was created for wholesale customers, allowing tiered discounts to apply to ongoing subscription orders. Pricing updates dynamically as customers adjust quantities in the cart.

Clear and consistent messaging: eHouse optimized the wholesale subscription experience across the PDP Buy Box, Cart, Checkout, and Recharge Customer Portal.

Seamless integration: Recharge’s Storefront API and SDK were leveraged to apply ongoing tiered discounts seamlessly to wholesale subscription orders.

Conversion-boosting details: To further improve the user experience, eHouse streamlined Boxed Water’s product catalog, updated photography, and implemented intuitive add-to-cart features.

Custom Shopify 2.0 Theme for Flexibility and Control

Boxed Water’s existing site had a custom theme that lacked functionality and flexibility, with many pages hard-coded. eHouse developed a fully flexible custom implementation on Shopify 2.0, giving Boxed Water complete control over the user experience.

Increased ADA Compliance

eHouse ensured accessibility for all users by updating Boxed Water’s on-site branding and interactive elements to meet ADA best practices. This included revising font styles and sizes, adjusting the brand’s color palette, and updating global elements like buttons and links for improved legibility and contrast.

Impactful Product Findability and Education

To optimize Boxed Water’s streamlined product catalog, eHouse organized products by category on a comprehensive "Shop All" page, complete with quick links for easy comparison and eliminating traditional filtering methods.

A quick add-to-cart feature for desktop was optimized, enabling instant selection of package sizes to reduce decision fatigue. On mobile collection pages, the add-to-cart button was replaced with a small, intuitive icon.

The home page now features “shop by category” blocks designed to help shoppers understand the product breadth at a glance.

eHouse also advised updating product photography on the product list page to facilitate easier comparison and improve findability, thereby increasing conversion rates. Secondary descriptions were added to product tiles (e.g., "Perfect for hiking, sports, and road trips") to educate users on size differences.

Additionally, the Product Detail Page (PDP) now includes a price-per-unit data point to encourage higher Average Order Values (AOV) by highlighting savings on larger purchases.

The Results

Subscription rates rose through clearly communicated benefits and persuasive calls to action. These enhancements not only improved product findability and accessibility but also drove higher average order values.

By reimagining both the DTC and B2B experience, eHouse helped Boxed Water create a stronger, more predictable revenue stream. With a strategic Shopify 2.0 build and thoughtful design updates, Boxed Water is now positioned for long-term sustainable growth while advancing its mission to reduce plastic waste and promote a better planet for future generations.
