What if you charged people to join the waitlist?

Sell 500 founding memberships before the first unit exists, and the launch is funded and sold before it is made.

The waitlist is the most valuable asset in your launch, and you are giving it away for free.

A free waitlist measures curiosity. A paid one measures intent, and the two numbers are nowhere near each other. Co-creation platforms like TYB have made the point repeatedly: a meaningful share of customers will pay to participate in a brand, not only to buy from it.

The mechanic is straightforward. Before the first unit exists, sell 500 founding memberships. What a member buys is access and authorship. A vote on the colorway. Early sight of the samples. A name in the credits on the launch page. First allocation when stock lands, and a permanent status flag on the account afterward. The membership is the product. The physical item is the payoff.

On Shopify that is a presale product, a storefront section gated to holders, and metaobjects defining founder perks so they can be granted, displayed, and honored later without custom work per campaign. Run the colorway vote as a simple poll behind the gate, then publish the result in public. That publication is most of your launch marketing, and it costs nothing.

The catch is that you have taken money for something that does not exist, so every delay becomes a customer service event instead of a private production problem. Founding members are the least forgiving audience you will ever have, because they bought the story rather than the object. If the colorway they voted for is the one your factory cannot run, you will explain that in public, to people who feel like owners. Set a hard refund policy up front. Communicate on a fixed schedule even when there is nothing to report. Never sell more memberships than your first production run can honor. Confirm presale disclosure requirements in the markets you sell in before the page goes live.

Pre-revenue and pre-community occupy the same 90 days. Only one of them leaves you with people who believe they built the thing.

Take this further

Founding memberships are inexpensive to test and revealing when they fail. If you have a launch on the horizon, there's a good conversation to be had about finding out early. ehouse is happy to have it.
