The best gifting flow ends with the recipient choosing, and the buyer never having to guess. Gifting is still the most broken thing in commerce: guess, ship, apologize, refund.
Flipping it is possible now because merchant-owned agents can hold a cart and complete a checkout natively on Shopify. Storefront MCP and Checkout Kit mean the conversation and the transaction are the same surface. You no longer need a bolt-on chat widget that hands off to a product page and hopes.
Picture the flow. A buyer sets $150 and writes a note. The recipient gets a link and talks to your concierge for 3 minutes: skin type, scents they hate, what is already on the shelf, whether they want the thing or the refill. The concierge narrows to 3 options, the recipient picks, and the agent checks out against the escrowed value. The buyer gets a confirmation and a delivery date. Nobody handles a return.
The operating model is where it gets real. You are running 1 order with 2 customers attached, which means 2 email records, 2 sets of consent, and a support policy for when they disagree. The escrowed value sits as a liability until it is spent, so finance needs to sign off on how it is recognized. And the concierge has to be genuinely good. A mediocre one is worse than a gift card, because a gift card at least does not waste the recipient's time.
There is a softer risk too. Some buyers want the gesture of having chosen. Offer them a mode where they pick from the concierge's shortlist instead of handing the whole decision away.
A gift card says you did not know. This says you knew enough to ask, and then got out of the way.
