Meaty Decisions: Migrating from Headless to Shopify Liquid and Recharge without Downtime or Disruption
Subscriptions are what ButcherBox built its business on. Every month, customers across the US receive a box of meat and seafood raised without feedlots, without shortcuts: third-party animal welfare audits, every supplier, every time. And they keep coming back for it.

The Challenge
The stakes were high: ButcherBox couldn’t risk disrupting the subscription experience and deliveries for its more than 400,000 customers nationwide. The ask was to seamlessly migrate ButcherBox from its complex and costly headless Shopify site to Shopify's Liquid templates and Recharge. While the goal was to build a solid foundation for continued growth using clean, out-of-the-box code, some customization would be required to ensure the new system supported the brand’s business needs and met customer expectations.
The Solution
This large-scale project required deep collaboration between ehouse, Recharge, and ButcherBox and a shared willingness to push the boundaries of the technologies – including Shopify Liquid and the newly released Recharge Affinity 2.0 customer portal theme.
Migration from headless: The team redesigned and rebuilt the site on Shopify and implemented Recharge as the brand’s subscription provider. To support ButcherBox’s unique product structure and customer experience requirements, the team had to rearchitect the system to ensure it worked seamlessly within the frameworks of Shopify and Recharge.
Streamlined design system: To ensure visual consistency while still providing flexibility, ehouse built a Liquid theme, implemented a Figma design library of brand elements. The team also added controls, modules, and systems to support efficient content population and guide future design decisions.
Solution engineering: Extensive collaboration was required to determine and validate how to recreate existing functionality in Shopify and Recharge. This included translating the business’s custom logic to automate how customers customize their boxes depending on product availability for their shipping location.
Customized subscription experience: Leveraging Recharge, the team integrated customizations to maintain the existing customer experience, including a custom subscription builder and cancellation flow driven by customer behaviors. The team also used the Recharge SDK to support adding earned bonuses like Deals, exclusive member discounts, and Add-Ons to subscriptions, ensuring that these bonuses skipped or cancelled along with the main subscription.
Loyalty-subscriptions integration: Given ButcherBox’s goals and the complexity of its subscription-based loyalty and referral experience, part of the migration involved integrating Antavo directly into the Recharge portal. This gave customers visibility into their loyalty points within their account dashboard and the ability to convert those points into Recharge credits, creating a more seamless experience across the customer journey.
The Result
ehouse delivered a fast, high-performing Shopify site with custom subscriptions and loyalty program that met all of ButcherBox’s business requirements in just 76 business days– and their customers didn’t notice a thing.
