Interview With John Pundt

May 6th, 2008 by Bob

Charleston is no stranger to art. Strolling through Downtown’s French Quarter, you’ll stumble upon dozens of galleries filled with masterpieces of all art forms. What you probably won’t find in this spot is the work of John Pundt. John’s artwork takes a different spin from the traditional paintings and sculptures of the French Quarter, and focuses on an alternative art form: screenprinting.

Q: What is your background? What brought you here?

A: I am from Charleston. I had a brief stint in Atlanta and went to SCAD for a year, but came back to Charleston about 6 years ago.

Q: How did you get into art?

A: I have always been into art. I loved drawing growing up. I have always always been a fan of counter culture.

Q: How did you get into screen printing?

A: My brother talked me into moving to Atlanta when I was 18. My first job there was working third shift at a screen printing company. That was my introduction to screen printing. While I was working there I saw an art show with Lindsey Kuhn and Frank Kozik. It opened the possibilities to use screen printing as an art. I decided to go to SCAD, and after 1 year there I was getting a lot of freelance work.

Q: What is the Charleston Silkscreening scene like?

A: It seems to be catching on. I am not saying I started it, but there are like 3 or 4 other artists doing it now.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?

A: Lindsey Kuhn and Frank Kozik. Those guys got me into screenprinting and rock posters.
Frank doesn’t get enough credit. He revolutionized screen printing. Kozik was one of the key people that helped introduce Shepard Fairey to a worldwide stage. I am alway looking for a new project or something new to learn. I like to have my hands into a bunch of different ideas.

Q: What does screenprinting mean to you as an art form?

A: Screenprinting is a way to mass produce and share a piece of art with a lot of people. A painting you put all this time into and there is only one. You put a lot of energy into a screenprint and you can produce it over and over. It is a great way to capture a larger audience.
I like to try to print on different things. It is a science to figure out the different ink to use to print on fabric, wood, paper or vinyl.
